Five days before Alam Elgebal opened its new stone showroom in Benghazi, I pitched an ad: a thief breaks in to steal something valuable, gets lost in how beautiful the stone is, and decides to enjoy the place instead.
I played the thief myself, wore my own hoodie and gloves, drove my own car, cut a 25-dinar wool hat into a balaclava, and found a black lamp in the Kish market for 30. My colleague Mohammed Howio shot and edited it. Total spend: 55 dinars.
It opened with a hook, borrowed a few familiar movie frames, and stayed straight-faced for all but two scenes. The client and the audience were happy. My own verdict: two scenes could have been better.
